Bandung’s Traditional Transportation


Hi there dear readers! When you visit a place, or even trip, there’s one important thing you need. Yup! Transportation. And when you come to Bandung, you will get a variety of transportation according to your needs. And among these, traditional transportation.

If you’re in Bandung, and are along the way, you will find some alternative transportation “unusual” found in several cities, even countries. Bus or taxi, you see very many in major cities around the world. But: becak (tricycle) and delman (wagon)? Apparently, only certain cities are still using their services.

When I was a kid, the streets of Bandung is not as dense and as busy as now. Bandung residents who have a motor vehicle, such as a car, or motorcycle, you could say very little. The rest is a “public transportation” or Damri (public buses). And most “dominate” the street as it is: becak.  Becak run down all streets, from small streets, to highways. All people do not hesitate anymore to drive it. At that time, with only Rp 1.000 course, the paddle rickshaw can take you around town, at least arrived at the destination which is nearly 1.5 km. From the housewives who want to shop, the kids who want to go to school, to the fathers who want to go to the office, they have felt the becak service.

Besides becak, delman (wagon) is a traditional transportation that you will find in Bandung. Delman is a  cart pulled by a horse, which is controlled by a coachman. Since this vehicle is rather large (greater than becak), not as free as becak. They (delman) has been localized in the wrought-specific place (such as tourist areas) to increase the attractiveness of tourism in the city, or in places where the outskirts of the city of Bandung (such as : Cimahi or Soreang).
Enough passenger capacity, when compared with the rickshaw. The number of passengers that can fit around 6-7 people. No use of manpower, because a horse that is ready to pull the delman with it’s passengers in it, to the destination.

As an alternative transportation, in addition, there are things that make their existence a bit knocked out. Why? Because nowaday Bandung, not like years before, which is still quiet by motorized vehicles. Now, the street was crowded with private cars, motorcycles, taxis, buses or “ojeg”, which could carry passengers more quickly to the destination. Therefore, the Regional Government of West Java treats a policy to curb the tricycles and wagon, localize them to places that are not too crowded with vehicles. But sometimes, the tricycles or wagon that mischief, violating rules set. They entered the highways, compete with cars and motorcycles. But their speed can not compete with cars or motorcycles, which ended up annoying other road users. Then, there was traffic jamned.

This problem will not occur, when the tricycle and wagon aware of its existence. And ready to follow the regulations. The government was certainly aware of these things, and will continue to protect the tricycles and the delman as a “legacy” in the field of transportation that should be preserved.
